Position Title: Lands Officer Job Posting

Job Summary:

Under the direction of the Lands Manager, the Lands Officer processes all Tsawout Lands Referrals, assists the Lands Manager where necessary in the associated duties of managing and developing land laws, environmental management plans, operational policies & procedures according to the current priorities of the Tsawout Land Management Committee/Tsawout Council. Provides monthly reporting for activities. Provides backup service to the land registry administration.

  • Assists the Lands Manager in all facets of Lands Management where necessary such as research for law development, environmental assessments, procedures, land use management policy, land referrals, operational work planning & evaluation and budgeting
  • Assists as back up to land registry as necessary with lands registry, assignment of subleases, land transfers, registry of surveys, mortgages, other land transactions according to the national First Nations Land Registry policy;
  • Assists the Lands Manager with functions relating to land use planning, environmental assessments or reviews, land surveys, land referrals; and informs band members in liasing with INAC about wills and estates
  • Acts as the Tsawout Lands Manager in the absence of the Manager and performs other duties as required by the Lands Manager;

Working conditions:

Monday to Friday, 8:30 to 4:30, additional hours as required for meetings & travel

Employment Requirements:

  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing, and in public when interacting with a variety of professionals and band members and inter-departmental communication.
  • Computer literate and ability to complete registration document, and upload documents to the First Nations Lands Registry, and generate reports
  • General knowledge and ability to understand the Tsawout Land Code, Lands Use Laws and policies
  • Ability to research, analyze and interpret data
  • Ability to write reports, proposals, correspondence and present in public settings
  • Knowledge of Tsawout First Nation cultural protocols and traditions is desired
  • Knowledge of general land use planning, lands registration, and development applications processing is preferred

Qualifications and Experience:

Completion of secondary school is required; Bachelor’s degree in business administration is an asset, lands certification, or the equivalent amount of experience and education;

  • First Nations Lands Management training or certification an asset.
  • Two years experience in a management role preferable with a First Nations organization;
  • Knowledge of Aboriginal cultural traditions and practices an asset
