The Vancouver Island Indigenous Foods Gathering will be taking place at the end of April 2018 (dates to be determined). Building on 8 years of gathering held in different places across the Island the gathering sets the table for people to share, connect and learn. The table will be set with the foods and knowledge holders and will focus on workshops that share hands on skills such as harvesting, preserving and preparing Indigenous foods; health value of a nourishing your body and community with these foods; seasonal harvesting and much more.
The two day gathering will culminate in a celebration feast held at the host Nation and will be an opportunity to showcase the Indigenous food workshops taking place before the event and offer a time to think about future harvesting activities for the upcoming spring and summer season.
The coordinator will be supported by an organizing committee made up of members from SȾÁUTW̱ Health (Tsawout), W̱JOȽEȽP Health (Tsartlip), Songhees Health, PEPÁḴEṈ HÁUTW̱, Project RECLAIM, SeaChange, Island Health, CRFair, and the Capital Regional District. There is also a toolkit available developed from previous workshops that will give the coordinator a template to work from in taking this project on. Typically in the past, workshops have attracted about 300 people.
